Andrew Witty Resigns as CEO of UnitedHealth Group

In a surprising move, Andrew Witty has resigned as the CEO of UnitedHealth Group in May 2025, citing personal reasons for his departure. Witty’s tenure was marked by significant challenges, including the tragic murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in late 2024, which shook the organization and raised questions about leadership stability. Additionally, the company faced major hurdles such as a high-profile cyberattack, rising healthcare costs, and increasing scrutiny over insurance claim denials, all contributing to a turbulent environment.

Andrew Witty joined UnitedHealth Group in 2018 as CEO of its Optum division before becoming president of the entire group in 2019. He was appointed CEO in 2021, tasked with steering the company through an evolving healthcare landscape. Despite his efforts to modernize operations and address systemic issues, the company’s stock value declined sharply under his leadership, reflecting investor concerns.

Following Witty’s resignation, Stephen Hemsley, the company’s former CEO and current chairman, has returned to lead UnitedHealth. Hemsley has expressed commitment to stabilizing the company and driving growth by 2026. UnitedHealth Group now faces a critical period as it works to regain trust and investor confidence.
